A set of decals and display card to create tribute builds for 617 Squadron “Dambusters”. They are designed for Tornado and F-35 Lightning II builds of the squadron lineage but could be applied to other aircraft including the Lancaster itself.

Taking the RAF’s 70th Anniversary Tornado as inspiration the decals allow for a direct recreation, an update to the 75th anniversary or even a look ahead to the 80th with the F-35 as the subject aircraft. There is also the opportunity to get more creative with imagery of the icons associated with Operation 'Chastise', the historic Lancaster and some classic logos.

Decals include:

  • Tail fin images using the squadron’s “dam-busted” insignia with sizing for either Tornado or F-35
  • Images of Guy Gibson V.C., who led the raid, and Sir Barnes Wallis who invented the “Bouncing Bomb”
  • Squadron number for Gibson’s Lancaster
  • Name insignia for cockpit sides
  • Iconic RAF phrases (intended for drop-tanks, large munitions or fuselage sides)
  • Images of the Lancaster in various sizes
  • Silhouette images of the Lancaster, Tornado and F-35
  • 70th, 75thand 80th anniversary numbers and years
  • WW2 RAF roundels in WW2, modern low visibility and “stealth” colours and tail flashes in various sizes
  • RAF and 617 Squadron badges

Also included is an A6 display card with the aircraft of the squadron and key points in its history. Intended as a backdrop to the model(s) for display purposes. These are not decals.

The decals themselves are printed on high grade clear water slide decal paper. They are produced as an entire sheet and the individual decals are not separate on the transparent layer. The transparent sheet is very thin and conforms well to model contours, although a decal setting solution is still recommended. They are sealed with a clear coat to protect them during handling & application.

One of the papers is clear so the decals are semi-transparent and final colour is affected by the under-lying model colour giving a weathered/aged effect. They will have higher contrast on lighter backgrounds.
